Are you referring to Ross Perot, the guy who ran against Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush in 1992? I don’t believe he quit, did he? Didn’t he get like 20% of the vote?
1992 was a long time back. You are absolutely right, I ‘misremembered’ this, thought he dropped out. But I only got it half right, some people claimed to have pix of his daughter so he almost dropped out.
